An audit that produces a list of good ideas is not much use to a facilities manager holding a capital budget. Ours produces a ranked list: what each item costs, what it saves, how confident we are in the number, and how long the plant has to be down to do it. Most reports open with changes that cost nothing but an afternoon on the controls.

What does the audit actually involve?

Typically two phases. First a site survey with instrumentation: power logging on the main refrigeration loads, pressure and temperature measurement around the cycle, thermal imaging of the cold envelope and pipework insulation, condenser performance and approach temperature, defrost cycle observation, and extraction of trend data from your control system. Then analysis and a written report ranking findings by cost, saving and disruption. Logging normally runs long enough to capture a representative production cycle rather than a single shift.

How much can we realistically expect to save?

It depends entirely on what the plant is doing now, and anyone quoting a percentage before seeing your site is guessing. What we can say is where the savings usually are. Compressor power tracks head pressure closely, so floating head pressure control on a plant running a fixed setpoint is frequently the single biggest item. Raising suction pressure even slightly, where the process allows it, has a similar effect. Demand defrost in place of a time clock, and sealing air infiltration at dock doors, are typically next. We put a measured number against each one for your plant.

Are there rebates or incentives for refrigeration efficiency work?

Efficiency Nova Scotia runs custom incentive programmes for commercial and industrial efficiency projects, and refrigeration upgrades such as variable speed drives, control improvements and heat recovery are exactly the kind of work those programmes are designed for. Eligibility and amounts depend on the measure and the verified saving. We will tell you which recommendations are likely to qualify and supply the technical data an application needs.

Can an audit help with compliance documentation?

Partly, and we are clear about the boundary. An energy audit will flag safety and compliance concerns we observe — corroded vessels, relief valves past their replacement interval, uncalibrated detection, questionable charge records — and that list is genuinely useful. It is not a substitute for a formal mechanical integrity inspection, and we will say so rather than let a report be used as one.

How often should a facility be reassessed?

Annually for high-volume operations, or any site where production has changed, because load profile drift is the usual reason a well-tuned plant slips. Every two to three years is reasonable for a stable facility. The cheaper alternative between audits is continuous trending: if your control system already logs suction and discharge pressures, compressor hours and power, a quarterly look at those graphs catches most of the drift.
