Heat Pump Installation
For Nova Scotia Homes

Most heat pump conversations around here start with an oil bill. Ace Refrigeration sizes and installs cold-climate heat pumps across the HRM — matched to your house, your existing heating, and the winters we actually get.

Cold-Climate Systems, Properly Sized

Sized for the House,
Not the Sales Brochure

A heat pump loses capacity as the temperature drops, so a unit sized for a mild day leaves you short in February. We calculate the heat loss for your house, specify a cold-climate rated system against it, and tell you plainly what the existing furnace or baseboards will still be doing on the coldest nights.

  • Rated for Our Winters We specify cold-climate models and check their published output at low outdoor temperatures, not just the headline rating on a mild day.
  • Placement Planned First Outdoor units go up off the ground and clear of the drip line so snow and roof melt cannot bury or ice them. Indoor heads go where the air can actually circulate.
  • Rebates Sorted Out Nova Scotia runs rebate programmes for heat pump upgrades, especially for homes coming off oil. We confirm what your job qualifies for and help with the paperwork.

Which Heat Pump Suits Your Home

The right answer depends on whether you have usable ductwork, how the house is laid out, and what you are heating with now.

A

Single-Zone Ductless

One outdoor unit, one indoor head. The usual choice for an open main floor or a single room that never gets comfortable.

Multi-Zone Ductless

Several indoor heads on one outdoor unit, each with its own control. Useful in older houses with closed-off rooms and no ductwork.

Ducted / Central

A central air handler feeding the whole house through ductwork. No wall units, even temperatures, and it cools in summer too.

Common Questions

Straight Answers

Do heat pumps actually work in a Nova Scotia winter?

Cold-climate models do. They keep producing useful heat well below freezing, which older units could not. What changes is capacity — output falls as the outdoor temperature drops, so on the coldest nights a correctly sized system may be running flat out or leaning on backup heat. That is normal, and it is why the sizing calculation matters more than the brand on the box.

Can a heat pump replace my oil furnace entirely?

Sometimes, and sometimes it makes more sense to keep the furnace as backup for the coldest stretch. That is a dual-fuel setup: the heat pump carries the house for most of the heating season and the furnace covers the extremes. We work out which is better for your house from the heat loss numbers and your current fuel use, then show you both.

Ductless or ducted — which should I get?

If you already have ductwork in reasonable condition, a ducted system heats and cools evenly with nothing on the walls. If you do not, running new ducts through a finished house is expensive, and a ductless or multi-zone system does the same job with far less disruption. We look at what is actually in the house before recommending either.

What rebates are available for a heat pump in Nova Scotia?

There are provincial programmes aimed at heat pump upgrades, with the strongest support generally going to homes switching away from oil. Eligibility and amounts change, and some programmes are income-tested, so we confirm what applies to your address before you commit rather than quoting a figure that may have moved.

How long does an installation take?

A single-zone ductless system is usually one day. Multi-zone installs with several indoor heads typically run one to two days depending on how the line sets have to be routed. A ducted system takes longer because the ductwork has to be assessed and often modified. You get the timeline after the site visit, not a guess over the phone.
