The things that go wrong on a ducted system are quiet. A blower wheel gathering dust loses airflow gradually. A defrost sensor drifts and the outdoor coil starts holding ice. A condensate drain blocks and finds the ceiling below it. None of it announces itself until it has become a repair.

How often should a ducted heat pump be serviced?

Twice a year if it both heats and cools — once in spring before the cooling season and once in autumn before the heating season. If the system is only used for part of the year, annually is enough. The reason for two visits is simple: a year-round heat pump runs roughly double the hours of a cooling-only air conditioner.

What does a ducted heat pump service include?

Cleaning the indoor coil and blower wheel, replacing filters, clearing the condensate drain and pan, checking the outdoor coil and cabinet for corrosion, measuring operating pressures with superheat and subcooling, testing the defrost cycle and reversing valve, checking electrical connections and capacitors, and verifying airflow and temperature split. Findings go in a written report.

How often do I need to change the filter?

Every one to three months on most ducted systems, and at the shorter end if there are pets in the house or anyone has allergies. A restricted filter is the single most common cause of poor performance, and it works the blower motor harder for less air. Check it monthly until you know how fast yours loads up.

Should I clear snow away from the outdoor unit in winter?

Yes. The outdoor unit needs clear airflow on all sides and underneath, and it sheds meltwater during its defrost cycle. If drifted snow or ice builds up around the base, that water cannot drain and refreezes into the coil. Keep it clear, and never chip ice off the coil with anything hard — the fins and refrigerant tubing damage easily.

Does maintenance affect my warranty?

Commonly, yes. Most manufacturers make documented regular servicing a condition of the parts warranty, particularly for the compressor. Our written report after each visit gives you the record if a claim ever needs supporting.
